Literally Wrong

 Like Brigadoon, this blog shows up every now and then when I blow a gasket.

The sky doesn't fall, just helicarriers and airplanes. That is NOT literally, and a writer SHOULD ABSOLUTELY know this. And the character narrating this, Peter Parker, is also an educated person who should know this.

ÑÕ SIGNOR!

It's been over 5 years since I last posted a dissection, but these mistakes were too much for me to take. "Ciudadonos" is not a word, it's "Ciudadanos", and it's "mis ciudadanos", since it's plural. And come on, "SENÕR"?!?!? Come on, it's "Señor", there are 53 million Spanish speakers in the US!

Not to mention that we should bury that stupid trope of having characters speakin in English (whether translated for the readers or actually speaking the language) dropping random words or phrases in their native language. Yes, bilingual people will do it, but not in the way writers think, and not in the case of the President (and his personal physician) of a fake Spanish-speaking Central American or South American country like Terra Verde.

By the way, the writer used Terra Verde and said it's in South America, and used the flag of that Marvel country... which is actually in Central America (first appearance Fantastic Four #117, 1971). TIERRA Verde is a different country, in Central America, which first appeared in Wolverine V2 #18 (1989). You know how I learned this? By googling for five seconds.

The most useless weapon in the universe...

Why does Parallax, who holds the power of the Green Lantern central battery (and we would later learn, the yellow one as well), need astronomical equipment to read what his position in the universe is? This is ridiculous, if I was still handing out scores, I would give this a 10.

Don't get used to it. So, I'm not even going to check handbooks or wikis for this, and, based on the previous panels, they're standing on even ground... but there's no fucking way Sunspot is the same height as Thor...

You thought I was gone...

... but I'm not! Almost one year after my last post, I'm back again! Just a couple of small dissections, first up:

Rogue's powers have never worked that way. She doesn't share powers, she copies them. And even if she shared them, that would leave Psylocke with less power, not feeling the strain of Rogue's use of the telekinesis. And "generating" TK? What?

You're gonna go blind!

There are some sound effect words, or onomatopoeias that just can't be used after something. Writers Bendis and Mack and/or letterer Joe Caramagna should know that (I'm sure someone as foulmouthed and internet-savvy as Bendis knows it) "fap" is used as a verb on the internet to refer to male masturbation. It's not a secret, and it's actually derived from the sound of the hand slapping the thigh, so it IS an SFX...

I have seen it before in a couple of books; but only once or twice... this double page spread is just... too much.

The hotel room exterior, the Jack and Matt Murdock murdock clippings, the nun picture (yeah, I know it's Matt's mom)... all that makes it even more disturbing. The last panel provides a clue, and the next page shows us it's just someone punching a sandbag:

Can we not use that SFX except for what it's intended?

Broken Tail

Holy crap, three posts in one month?!?!? Yeah, what can I say. This is something that sometimes happens to us letterers (well, it happens to me sometimes), but it's usualy caught at some point before the book is printed or otherwise published. To this letterer's (and editors, etc) credit, the lost balloon tail is white on stormtrooper armor, so it's not that easy to spot.
